Weight Gain During Pregnancy – What’s Normal?

havingababyWeight gain during pregnancy is normal and to be expected, but sometimes as you are trying to fit into your jeans you might wonder just how much weight gain is normal and how much is due to the double chocolate sundae you ate since you are now ‘eating for two’.

Magazine’s are usually no help with celebrities talking about the tiny amount of weight that they did put on when they carried their babies, and since we all don’t have personal trainers during our pregnancies it’s time to figure out what is the right weight for you as your baby grows.

So how much weight is normal?

While there isn’t such a thing as ‘normal’ weight gain because every women starts with different body types and BMI’s, but the following weight guide will give you an idea of how many pounds that you should put on over the course of the pregnancy.

Normal/Average Weight – 25 to 35 pounds (11 to 16 kilograms)

Underweight – 28 to 40 pounds (13 to 18 kilograms)
Overweight – 15 to 25 pounds (7 to 11 kilograms)

Keep in mind that if you are carrying twins or more then the weight gain will be further increased.

How quickly does the weight appear?

It’s actually a very gradual process starting with just 2 to 3 pounds in the first trimester and a steady 3 to 4 pounds a month thereafter until the baby comes.

What is the weight made up of?

Actually only a very small part of your weight gain will be your baby, most of it is due to the things in your body that supports it instead.

Baby: 8 pounds
Placenta: 2 to 3 pounds
Amniotic fluid: 2 to 3 pounds
Breast tissue: 2 to 3 pounds
Blood supply: 4 pounds
Fat Stores: 5 to 9 pounds
Uterus increase: 2 to 5 pounds
